Silicon Valley, CA and New York, NY—September 22, 2009—Mode Media Corporation. (, the pioneer of vertical networks, announced the launch of 1.0 Beta. An application from Mode Media Labs, Tinker enables the aggregation, moderation and distribution of real-time conversations taking place on social media sites, including Twitter, FriendFeed, Facebook and other photo and video sharing platforms. Tinker enables brand advertisers to connect with the new real-time audience within the Glam and Brash Publishers Network of over 1400 sites and blogs by providing brand-safe ad solutions. Tinker is also quickly becoming a critical tool for leading news media sites to enrich their coverage with real-time social media conversations, and today is also launching Tinker News for tracking real-time conversations around major news events. In a separate announcement also made today from the DEMO ’09 conference in San Diego, Mode Media has launched its Tinker Apps Network to help real-time applications monetize their services and content.

Mode Media was the first company to successfully monetize real-time micro-blogging conversations, with a sponsored ad campaign during the Academy Awards that ran across the Glam Publisher Network of women’s sites. Since entering beta in March, has been used by advertisers and news media alike, who appreciate the tight level of control that Tinker’s filtering and curation offers over the aggregation and content of real-time conversation streams.

Unlike most simple conversation aggregators, embeddable Tinker Application Widgets show real-time conversations that can be organized by both topic and authors, enabling publishers to bring customized and interactive conversations streams to their own sites. For example, during this past New York Fashion Week, a Tinker Application Widget combined conversations about the shows, designers and trends from inside the tents and across the fashion community that was then distributed and embedded across nearly 100 fashion and style publisher sites in the Glam Publisher Network.

Tinker has continued to roll-out significant new features for media companies, advertisers and consumers since entering beta, including improved search, showcasing trending topics within single event streams, and the ability to view links/photos/videos that people are tweeting about for any event. Key features include:

Tinker News: Launching today, a news portal similar to Google News, but powered by social media. Tinker News aggregates social media streams for breaking news items based on how the news is trending on Twitter and other social media platforms. For instance, a top-trending news story could be pulled from Reuters and appear on Tinker News; if a reader wants to see the related tweets they can click to a Tinker event page that lets the reader join that conversation.

Tinker Conversation Streams: Content publishers can now divide real-time streams by author, photo, video, articles and/or their stated location.

Tinker Media Apps: A number of leading media companies and websites are already using Tinker’s unique capabilities for capturing real-time conversation streams about major news events. Live moderation and filtration tools built into Tinker enable media companies to surface and manage conversation streams that are focused and relevant to their online audience. For example, uses Tinker to show relevant real-time conversations for a number of news events and also as part of its ongoing healthcare coverage at

Early next year, Mode Media Labs will launch a developer program releasing Tinker API Platform to app developers to help create the next generation of real-time news and content aggregation applications.

Tinker Stream Ads: Tinker creates unique opportunities for advertisers and brands through Tinker Stream Ads, available in standard IAB units which are composed of aggregated and filtered real-time social media conversations. Tinker Stream Ads can carry campaign messages anywhere across the and Publisher Networks, as well as the Tinker Apps Network, with a combined reach of more than 52 million US visitors a month and 111 million uniques worldwide. Currently, more than 50 million Tinker Stream Ads run each month across the 1,400 sites in the Glam Publisher Network, powered by the GlamAdapt ad-targeting server which determines context, audience, time, placement and engagement, thus delivering the first contextually-targeted brand ads for real-time advertising on the web.

Innovative products debuting later this year include: TinkerVision, which will allow brands to visualize related tweets; Tinker140Plus, which matches the format of a Twitter post—140 characters long, and able to include text links, and Tinker API, which will be released to app developers to help them create the next generation of real-time news and content aggregation applications.
